Daterra is the world’s first B Corp certified farm and carbon negative farm. With 50% of their massive 6400 hectares of land dedicated to environmental preservation, sustainability and impact are at the forefront of everything they do. Daterra also focuses on water conservation, solar-power generation and waste reduction as well as education, research, and experimentation. Over 500 hectares of their land is involved in research projects and experiments which develop new varieties with properties of increased yield, drought tolerance and disease resistance. One famous example of experimental varieties being born in Daterra is the Laurina variety.
Low Caf Reserve is made up of two varieties that are naturally low in caffeine - Laurina and Aramosa. Both cultivars have been under study at Daterra for the past 20 years and are now fully adapted to their terroir. Laurina is a wild coffee varietal and its rarity comes from the specific environmental conditions it requires to grow. Aramosa is a hybrid varietal comprising Coffea Arabica and Coffea Racemosa, which was developed specifically to take the low caffeine and drought resistance characteristics of the Coffea Racemosa, and combine them with the flavour from the Arabica.
The coffee was processed as a tree-dried natural, a process which is unique to the Cerrado region - so much so that it is often known as the Cerrado process. During this process, the cherries are left on the tree, allowing them to go through the full maturation and drying process while still on the branch. The result of this is increased complexity, body and sweetness. This process couldn’t work in many places, but Cerrado’s very dry, warm and stable climate provides the ideal conditions.
